Is reupholstering my furniture worth the expense?

Hello and Thank you for Reading my blog.

I am new to blogging. My goal is to make my blogs as informative about upholstery as I possible can.

The first question that I would like to address that people often ask is ” is reupholstering my furniture worth the expense?”

The answer to that question is “it depends”.

Almost all of the furniture that I reupholster is a family hand me down.

A lady came by the shop and wanted to get her ottoman reupholstered. I always like to ask where their particular piece of furniture came from . Her response was from her grandmother. It had emotional value to her. Could she had gone out and purchased another ottoman at a price that was lower than the price I quoted her to reupholster the one she had?

Yes.  However; grandma’s furniture is made of real wood that is why it can be handed down for generation with only the foam and the fabric being replaced. It also had emotional connection that can never be replaced.

I am working on 6 dinning chairs that are actually (wait for it), that is right you guessed it, they are made of real wood. They are beautiful. I cleaned them with wood soap. I put restore a finish on them and wow I have to tell you that they have a worn but beautiful look that only real wood can have. Grandma would been proud that her grandchildren are taking such good care of her treasures.

I have one more example for  you.

Recently I meet a nice Senior couple that are in there 80’s. The asked me to redo there dinning chairs. When I stopped by to pick them up they invited me into there home and told me the story of their furniture.

Their friend had hand crafted each chair. He was a WWII war Vet that was Japanese and fought in a an American Japanese regiment which I never knew existed during that time. When he got back home he got into wood working. He not only made the chairs but the table also. Then they showed me the exquisite hutch that he had made by hand. This war Vet had a great deal of talent. They were asked if they wanted to buy a new dinning set by someone, which they replied, no. To tell you the truth I don’t blame them. When I was cleaning the wood you could feel the love this man had put into each pierce. These treasures where in their home not because they could not have bought others, but because each piece connected them with their long lost friend and a piece of history that can never be replaced.

What price could you put on that.

As you can now see that is why I said “depends”. If you like your furniture. If it has value. Then yes it is worth the expense. If it has no value sell it on craigslist and go by something that you can will to your children and their children. It might cost a pretty penny for good quality furniture but we have to remember the old saying “you get what you pay for”.
